Subtotals and grand totals
Turns the automatic subtotal rows and grand total row and column on or off.
When to use it
Subtotal rows appear for each outer row field and grand totals for rows and columns. Both can be turned off or moved.

Worked examples
No subtotals
Design, Subtotals, Do Not Show Subtotals → Subtotal rows removed
Cleaner detail tables.
Rows only
Design, Grand Totals, On for Rows Only → A grand total row but no total column
Common for time across the top.
Custom subtotals
Right-click a row field, Field Settings, Custom, check Average and Max → Several subtotals per group
Multiple subtotals.
Worth knowing
- Grand totals of averages are averages of all rows, not of the subtotals.
- Turn subtotals off before flattening a pivot.
- Subtotals at the top or bottom follow the layout form.
Where it goes wrong
- A grand total column on a monthly layout adds a meaningless yearly average when the value is an average.
- Filtered items are excluded from totals by default.
