Sorting a pivot
Orders row or column items by label or by their values.
When to use it
Row and column items can be sorted by their labels or by their values, and the sort sticks through refreshes.
The shape of it
- How
Click the dropdown on a row field, Sort, or right-click a value cell and Sort Largest to Smallest.
Worked examples
Sort by value
Right-click a value cell, Sort, Sort Largest to Smallest → Row items ordered by that value
Top sellers first.
Sort by label
Click the row field dropdown, Sort A to Z → Alphabetical labels
Default order.
Manual order
Field dropdown, More Sort Options, Manual → Drag items into any order
Custom orders.
Worth knowing
- Custom lists (File, Options, Advanced) sort months and regions in your preferred order automatically.
- Sorting by a value column in a cross-tab sorts by that column's values.
- Sort settings live on the field and persist.
Where it goes wrong
- Sorting by value with a column field sorts by the grand total unless you pick a column.
- Manual sorts are lost if the field is removed and re-added.
