Manual grouping
Combines chosen items into a custom group, like three regions into one territory.
When to use it
Select several items and group them by hand into a custom group, such as three regions into one territory.
The shape of it
- How
Select the items with Ctrl, right-click, Group, then rename the new group.
Worked examples
Combine items
Ctrl + click West and Central in Rows, right-click, Group → A new Group1 containing both, with the others ungrouped
Then rename Group1.
Rename
Click Group1, type Territory A, Enter → Renamed
Meaningful names.
Ungroup
Right-click the group, Ungroup → Items return to the original field
Reset.
Worth knowing
- Manual groups create a new field (Region2) you can move or remove.
- Better long term: add the grouping column to the source data.
- Group the leftovers into an Other group for a clean table.
Where it goes wrong
- Groups are lost if the source changes structure.
- The grouped field name is generic until renamed.
