Removing automatic date grouping
Stops Excel splitting dates into Years, Quarters, and Months automatically.
When to use it
Newer Excel automatically groups date fields into Years, Quarters, and Months when they are added to a pivot. It can be undone per pivot or disabled globally.
The shape of it
- How
Right-click the grouped field, Ungroup, or disable it under File, Options, Data.
Worked examples
Ungroup
Right-click the grouped date field, Ungroup → Individual dates return
Per pivot.
Disable globally
File, Options, Data, check Disable automatic grouping of Date/Time columns → No pivot auto-groups
Global.
Regroup
Right-click, Group, choose Months only → Regroup the way you want
Custom grouping.
Worth knowing
- Auto grouping adds Years and Quarters fields to the list.
- Fiscal calendars need a helper column regardless.
- Data Model pivots do not auto-group.
Where it goes wrong
- Auto grouping confuses users expecting a date list.
- Ungrouping one pivot does not affect others on the same cache.
