When to use it

Grouping rolls daily dates up into months, quarters, and years. Newer Excel does it automatically when a date field is added to Rows.

The shape of it

How

Right-click a date in the row area, Group, pick the levels. Newer Excel groups dates automatically.

  • Weeks

    Weeks.

  • Ungroup

    Undo the grouping.

Worth knowing

  • Always group Years with Months or Januaries from different years merge.
  • Grouping adds Years and Quarters fields you can use as columns.
  • Fiscal years need a helper column in the source.

Where it goes wrong

  • Text dates cannot be grouped: "Cannot group that selection".
