When to use it

Extends the selection from the active cell back to A1.

Worked examples

  • Select back to the start

    Click the last data cell, press Ctrl + Shift + Home Everything up to A1 is selected

    Select from the end.

  • Rectangle to A1

    From row 500, Ctrl + Shift + Home Rows 1 to 500 in the current column and everything left

    A rectangle anchored at A1.

  • Frozen panes

    With frozen panes, Ctrl + Shift + Home Selects back to the first unfrozen cell

    Same rule as Ctrl + Home.

Worth knowing

  • Ctrl + Shift + End is the mirror image.
  • Useful after Ctrl + End to select the whole used range from the bottom.
  • In edit mode selects text to the start.

Where it goes wrong

  • Frozen panes change the anchor.
  • Rarely better than Ctrl + Home then Ctrl + Shift + End.
