When to use it

Pastes the clipboard: everything (values, formulas, formats) by default. The paste options button afterwards lets you change what was pasted.

Worked examples

  • Paste everything

    Ctrl + C a block, Ctrl + V An exact copy including formats

    The default.

  • Change the paste afterwards

    Ctrl + V, then Ctrl to open paste options, V Switch the paste to values

    The little clipboard button.

  • Paste from outside

    Copy from a web page, Ctrl + V Pasted with the web formatting

    Use Paste Special, Text, to avoid it.

Worth knowing

  • Ctrl + Shift + V pastes values in newer versions.
  • Ctrl + Alt + V opens Paste Special.
  • Pasting into a selection larger than the copy repeats the copy to fill it.

Where it goes wrong

  • Pasting into a filtered range fills hidden rows too.
  • Pasting formats over a Table can break its style.
