When to use it

Adds an outline border around the selection.

Worked examples

  • Box a range

    Select a block, Ctrl + Shift + & → A thin border around the outside

    Box a table.

  • Box a total

    Select a total row, Ctrl + Shift + & → Boxed

    Highlight totals.

  • Remove

    Ctrl + Shift + _ → Borders removed

    The reverse.

Worth knowing

  • The & is on the 7 key: Ctrl + Shift + 7.
  • Ctrl + 1, Border, for inside lines and styles.
  • Accounting totals traditionally use a top border and double bottom border.

Where it goes wrong

  • Outline only; no inside gridlines.
  • Borders survive Delete and confuse layouts later.
