Worked examples

  • Hide columns

    Select columns D to F, Ctrl + 0 → The columns disappear

    Hide helper columns.

  • Hide one column

    Click a cell, Ctrl + 0 → That column hides

    One column.

  • Unhide

    Select the columns either side, Home, Format, Unhide Columns → They reappear

    Ctrl + Shift + 0 is disabled on many Windows setups.

Worth knowing

  • Grouping columns is friendlier for readers.
  • Ctrl + Shift + 0 for unhide conflicts with a Windows keyboard-language shortcut; use the ribbon.
  • Column letters skip where columns are hidden.

Where it goes wrong

  • Hidden columns break Ctrl + Shift + → selections in unexpected ways.
  • Helper columns hidden and forgotten get deleted by the next person.
