When to use it

Expands the selected pivot field to show the next level of detail.

Worked examples

  • Expand an item

    Select a row label, Alt + Shift + → The item expands to show its children

    Drill down.

  • Collapse

    Alt + Shift + ← Collapses it

    Drill up.

  • Expand all

    Right-click, Expand/Collapse, Expand Entire Field Every item expands

    All at once.

Worth knowing

  • Double-clicking a label toggles expansion too.
  • The + and - buttons can be hidden under PivotTable Analyze.
  • Same keys as grouping rows outside pivots.

Where it goes wrong

  • Expanding a field with many items makes a huge table.
  • Only works when a lower-level field exists.
