The fields pane
The panel where fields are dragged into areas; it disappears when the pivot is not selected.
When to use it
The fields pane is where fields are dragged into areas. It shows only when a cell inside the pivot is selected, and can be brought back if closed.
The shape of it
- How
Click inside the pivot to show it, or PivotTable Analyze, Field List to bring it back.
Worked examples
Show the pane
Click any cell in the pivot → The pane appears
Selection shows it.
Reopen
PivotTable Analyze, Field List → Toggles it when it was closed with the X
Bring it back.
Change the layout
The gear icon in the pane, Fields Section and Areas Section Side-By-Side → A layout with more room for long field lists

Worth knowing
- Search box at the top filters long field lists.
- Right-click a field for Add to Rows, Columns, or Values.
- The pane can be undocked and resized.
Where it goes wrong
- Closing it with the X makes people think it is gone for good.
- Data Model pivots show tables as expandable groups, which hides fields.
