1What it does

Goal Seek answers one question. A data table answers all of them at once: it re-runs your model for every value in a row or column and lays the results out in a grid. A two-variable table takes price down one side and volume across the top and shows margin at every combination — the thing a board asks for the moment you present a single number. It feels like magic and it's a normal formula; the only odd part is that you point it at the INPUT cells, not at the outputs.

2The shortcut

AltA, W, T
  1. 1Put the formula you care about in the top-left corner of an empty grid, and the values to test down the left column and across the top row.
  2. 2Select the whole grid including the corner formula, then Alt + A, W, T.
  3. 3**Row input cell** is the model input the top row feeds; **Column input cell** is the one the left column feeds. Leave the other blank for a one-variable table.

Before — one answer, at one price and one volume

AB
1Price$42
2Volume12,000
3Unit cost$26
4Fixed costs$164,000
5Operating income$28,000

One number is what you'd present. The first question back is always “and what if volume is lower?”

4When you use it

  • Show operating income across a range of prices and volumes on one page.
  • Test a loan against several rate scenarios without duplicating the schedule.
  • Give a board the whole sensitivity grid instead of the one number you picked.
