Selects the cells the active formula refers to directly: its precedents. A quick audit of where a number comes from.

Find inputs
Click a formula cell, press Ctrl + [ → The cells it references are selected
Press Enter to cycle through them.
Full chain
Ctrl + Shift + { → All precedents at every level
The whole chain feeding the cell.
Cross-sheet
Ctrl + [ on a cell referencing another sheet → Jumps to that sheet and selects the cell
Works across sheets.
Worth knowing
- F5 then Enter returns to the formula cell.
- Trace Precedents (Alt, M, P) draws arrows instead.
- Ctrl + ] goes the other way.
Where it goes wrong
- Does not follow references into closed workbooks.
- Selecting precedents in a huge model can be slow.
