Redo, or repeat the last action

When to use it

Redoes what Ctrl + Z undid, or, when there is nothing to redo, repeats the last action like F4.

Worked examples

  • Redo

    Ctrl + Z too far, press Ctrl + Y → The undone step comes back

    Redo.

  • Repeat an action

    Bold a cell, click another, Ctrl + Y → The second cell is bolded

    Repeat the last formatting action.

  • Repeat an insert

    Insert a row, move, Ctrl + Y → Another row inserted

    Repeats structural changes too.

Worth knowing

  • F4 outside edit mode does the same repeat.
  • Repeat works for formatting, inserting, deleting, and many dialog actions.
  • The Redo button is on the Quick Access Toolbar.

Where it goes wrong

  • After a new action the redo stack is gone.
  • Not every action can be repeated; the button greys out.
