When to use it

Fills the selection to the right from the leftmost cell.

Worked examples

  • Fill across

    Type a formula in B2, select B2:M2, Ctrl + R The formula fills across twelve months

    Row-wise fill.

  • Copy formats right

    Select a formatted column and blank columns right, Ctrl + R Formats copied across

    Copy column styling.

  • Fill a block

    Select B2:M20, Ctrl + R Every row filled from column B

    A whole block from one column.

Worth knowing

  • Ctrl + D fills down.
  • Lock the row or column with $ before filling so references behave.
  • Fill Series (Alt, H, F, I, S) generates sequences.

Where it goes wrong

  • Copies the left cell over everything selected.
  • Relative references shift by column, which may not be intended.
