Excel like a finance pro.
Navigation shortcut
Go to the last used cell on the sheet
Ctrl + End on Windows, Fn + Ctrl + → on Mac.
When to use it
Jumps to the last cell Excel considers used: the intersection of the last used row and column. A quick check for stray data and for bloated sheets.
The shape of it
- Windows
Ctrl + End
- Mac
Fn + Ctrl + →
Worked examples
Find the end
Press Ctrl + End → The cursor lands on the bottom-right cell of the used range
Usually the corner of your data.
Diagnose a bloated sheet
Ctrl + End lands on row 48,000 of a 500-row sheet → Phantom used cells below the data
Formatting or a stray character far down; delete those rows and save to reset.
Select all data
Ctrl + Home, Ctrl + Shift + End → Everything from A1 to the last used cell is selected
Copying the whole sheet without grabbing a million rows.
Worth knowing
- If it lands far past your data, the sheet has phantom used cells; delete those rows and save.
- If the file is unexpectedly large, Ctrl + End on each sheet shows which one has the phantom range.
- Deleting (not clearing) the rows and columns past the data, then saving, resets the used range.
- Ctrl + Shift + End extends the selection to the same spot.
Where it goes wrong
- The used range includes formatted-but-empty cells, so the target is often past the visible data.
- Does not reset until the workbook is saved.
