Date function
TIME
Builds a time value from hours, minutes, and seconds.
CommonDifficulty 1050 · CapableUsage rank #160 of 520
When to use it
Builds a time from hours, minutes, and seconds. Values overflow sensibly, so TIME(0,90,0) is 1:30.
The shape of it
- Syntax
=TIME(hour, minute, second)
Worked examples
A fixed time
=TIME(9,30,0) → 9:30 AM
Half past nine.
Minutes overflow
=TIME(0,90,0) → 1:30 AM
Ninety minutes.
Add an hour
=A1+TIME(1,0,0) → 10:30 AM
A1 is 9:30. Adds one hour.
Worth knowing
- Times are fractions of a day: 6:00 is 0.25.
- Add hours across days with =A1+hours/24 rather than TIME, which wraps at 24.
- Format as [h]:mm to show durations over 24 hours.
Where it goes wrong
- Hours above 23 wrap around; TIME(25,0,0) is 1:00 AM.
- Negative results show as ###### unless you use the 1904 date system or ABS.
