When to use it
The Japanese-named version of DBCS: half-width to full-width.
The shape of it
- Syntax
=JIS(text)
Worked examples
Katakana
=JIS("ｶﾀｶﾅ") → カタカナ
Half-width katakana to full-width.
Letters
=JIS("abc") → ａｂｃ
Latin letters to full-width.
Non-DBCS system
=JIS(A2) → unchanged
No effect on a non-Japanese system.
Worth knowing
- Prefer DBCS in new formulas; JIS exists for older Japanese workbooks.
- ASC reverses it.
- Only meaningful with a DBCS language installed.
Where it goes wrong
- No visible effect on most systems.
- Not the same as a character-set conversion.
