When to use it
Information about the environment: operating system, Excel version, current directory, recalc mode, and the number of active worksheets.
The shape of it
- Syntax
=INFO(type_text)
Worked examples
Version
=INFO("release") → 16.0
The Excel version number.
Operating system
=INFO("system") → pcdos
Windows; "mac" on a Mac.
Current folder
=INFO("directory") → C:\Users\blake\Documents\
The current default folder.
Worth knowing
- Other types: numfile, origin, osversion, recalc.
- Useful in a diagnostics sheet for support questions.
- Volatile.
Where it goes wrong
- Values differ by machine and make a workbook look changed.
- Some types are meaningless on Excel Online.
