When to use it

Information about the environment: operating system, Excel version, current directory, recalc mode, and the number of active worksheets.

The shape of it

Syntax
=INFO(type_text)

Worked examples

  • Version

    =INFO("release") 16.0

    The Excel version number.

  • Operating system

    =INFO("system") pcdos

    Windows; "mac" on a Mac.

  • Current folder

    =INFO("directory") C:\Users\blake\Documents\

    The current default folder.

Worth knowing

  • Other types: numfile, origin, osversion, recalc.
  • Useful in a diagnostics sheet for support questions.
  • Volatile.

Where it goes wrong

  • Values differ by machine and make a workbook look changed.
  • Some types are meaningless on Excel Online.
