Worked examples
Simple
=IMAGINARY("3+4i") → 4
The coefficient of i.
Negative
=IMAGINARY("0-j") → -1
Negative unit with a j suffix.
Real number
=IMAGINARY(4) → 0
A real number has no imaginary part.
Worth knowing
- Reactance is the imaginary part of impedance.
- IMREAL for the other coefficient.
- Accepts either suffix.
Where it goes wrong
- #VALUE! for invalid text.
- Uppercase suffixes fail.
